The group became defunct before Djinee and his band area graduated from the University.
Upon graduation, Djinee later left Ogbomosho for Lagos in search of a job as a TV Personality. He later then got his first Video jockey role at Sound city TV, which just started at that time. While working with sound city Djinee’s powerful yet emotional laden voice caught the ears of his first record label boss which then landed him a deal with Westside Music Inc. While in discussions about his first single with the label, He was given a chance to work with one out of the top three (3) best producers in Nigeria at that time for his first single.
Djinee chose to work with legendary producer Cobhams Asuquo. There was something unique about Cobhams which Djinee felt will help him bring out the sound he wanted to achieve at that time. "Cos I'd heard about him and his ability. We met, discussed the music and all. I loved his knowledge and passion for the music, we later then went to record with him at Question Mark Studios ".
“I wanted to achieve a distinct sound. Different from the songs in demand then. We had the galala, suwo and other Street commercial sounds making waves. I just wanted to sing and let my voice be heard and hopefully touch lives with my music. I felt that was my best chance at winning the audience over, even though this was against my label's wishes, I still went ahead”.
Djinee's label was against the release of Ego which was produced by Cohbams. He still insisted that Ego be released and promoted and it was later agreed upon between he and the label that if the song wasn't a hit record, he'll pay back the sum used in production as It was too huge a risk at that time. Djinee still went ahead and it worked out perfectly more than he imagined as Ego became an instant success.
Djinee captured the hearts of many with this melodic tune. If there was a song in 2004 that was a lover’s rock anthem, it was surely Ego. He followed up with hits such as Lade, I No Dey Shame and more. This new set of singles proved Djinee’s vocal dexterity once again.
"I want to just sing and let my voice be heard. I want to make live music. Music that'll transcend generations on long after I have departed from this world and still sound fresh to my audience".
His hard work and talent was then rewarded when he won the Best New Artiste award at the Nigerian Music Awards in London and nabbed two Nominations at the Hip Hop World Awards 2006.
He then quit Sound City in 2007 to concentrate on his music career but TV found him again when he hosted two reality music competitions.
He however returned in 2010 with yet another bang. His affiliation with emerging rap acts, M.I Abaga, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince signed to Chocolate City – who managed him at the time – appeared to have provided a sort of diversity to his music as he released Overkilling and the remix which featured the three aforementioned rappers. The video to the new hit track which was directed by Mex Ossai shot him up to the top of the charts.
Music lovers and critics appeared to like the new Djinee because in that year alone, he landed nominations and awards at the Channel O awards, SMVA and NMVA awards.
This year Djinee has lined up a bunch of new releases and shows unlike never before. This will also include the launch of his New Merchandize clothing line – Love religion by Djinee. Which also includes a children charity initiative centered around caring and providing for the future leaders of our society.
